The most important steps of gesture Drawing and a lively expression

This site is under construction, and will get more content soon !

1.Get rid of the idea, to want to copy the pose

Gesture Drawing does not have the aim, to copy the figure or pose or to get all proportions und the anatomy exacty right. It is also not about drawing the contour line. Make yourself free of these two thoughts, they blockade the free, lively and dynamic line.

2. Focus on the dynamic and force, expressed by the pose

This doesn´t mean there are no aims at all. The aim of gesture drawing is to draw the force und dynamic of the pose. Focus on the dynamic and direction of the force, that is expressed by the drawing. Let your strokes become lines of force, lively lines of dynamic. Aim is to draw the force and to transform the strokes into lines of dynamic.

3. Train seeing the dynamic lines of action in your pose

You have to see the main lines of action in the movement. This are one, two ore more main lines, that express the pose best. Often this are the legs, the arms or the spine, but it also can be the position of the head or a geometrical shape. You draw, what you discover in the pose. You draw something, you cannot see physically. These lines of action can only be felt. You will learn to feel the same dynamic and force of the pose in yourself. Gesture Drawing is a kind of empathic drawing.

4. Draw lively lines of expression(Lines of force)

Draw with fast, free, light and dynamic strokes. Don´t holf your oencil or brush tight but move with your whole hand, joints and arms. Good results can be achieved in some seconds or 2-4 minutes. Don´t draw too long one pose. Let your strokes glide onto the paper and create the dynamic of the pose once more. Your lines become lines of expression. They get live and character and turn into expression and gesture. The better you can see and fell these lines of action, the better you can express them in your strokes. If you train this, you will find the right strokes automatically.
.

5. Play with expression

You can vary in the amount of strokes, you can draw a lot or just a few, you can make them thicker or thinner. You can emphasise the most important lines by increasing pressure of you pencil. You can also exaggerate one part of the movement. Aim is to get the main movement and to make it visible.

The value of gesture Drawing

With Gesture Drawing, you can develop a feeling for the pose and movement. You can really develop a feeling for the body very well. For all, who do yoga or teach yoga, this is a great possibility to get to know the poses in a deeper way.

Gesture drawing creates the lively, moving, dynamic expression in your drawing. By training this kind of drawing, you can make progress very fast and you will give your drawings live.

Therefore, for me Gesture Drawing is a very important exercise for artists as well als for everyone, who is interested in creatind deeper feelings for a pose. By this, your drawing gets soul and live. Your drawing will move the observer and the audience. If you train seeing and creating this expression in your drawings, you can also transform this lively expression more easily in more detailed drawings or paintings.
