Camilla Carlens Yogadrawings
experience yoga postures through drawings

- yoga drawings as an inspiration for embellishing your yoga postures
- see and experience yoga poses through artistical criteria
- understand and learn from professional yogis like BKS Iyengar, Heinz Grill, Narayani…
- learn drawing by conscious looking instead of schema – drawing
- create expression in yoga poses or/and drawings
—Camilla Carlens
My drawings are meant to make qualities of elaborated yoga postures perceptible and experienceable so that one can transfer them into one’s own yoga practice.
In this drawings of Heinz Grill I wanted to express two directions: the downward movement in the legs and the upward and backward direction in the upper body
Yogaportraits and Drawings
Each yoga posture has an expression. The expression transcends the body. So it is not about the body but about its expression. And through the expression speaks his creator.

Yogaportraits
sepia, black-white, colored
In a pose lives the expression of the soul of its creator. This expression makes a yoga pose expressive, recognizable and unique and shall be felt through the drawing.

Coloured pencil drawings
Portraits of yogis
When I draw, I begin with observing the qualities and expression of a yoga pose. Then I have an idea, what I want to work out and make visible.Qualities like direction, alignment, rising, erecting, letting-go, centering or width shall be expressed within a drawing.

Yoga illustrations
Illustration of yoga postures
Especially yogis, who have explored yogaposes deeply, transfer experience through their poses. The conscious mastery of the body transforms a yoga pose into a sculpture, it becomes a mastery. With my drawings I want to transcend pure illustration or schematics and go towords the expression of a yoga pose.

Pencil Drawings
Detailed pencil drawings
The individual movement and direction of a yogapose, the dynamic of the spine, the legs, the arms can often be seen in the cloths. In my pencildrawings I want to express these movements .
Yoga Geometry and further Expressions

Yoga Geometry I
Yoga poses & their shapes geometry
Depending on the yoga pose, there are different geometric shapes hidden within the pose. Circles, lines, different triangles or symmetry. Paying attention to the geometry makes your yoga pose clearer in it´s shape.

Yoga Geometry II
Yoga poses & cosmic geometry
The numbers like the 1, the 2, the 3, represent cosmic entities. The 3 can be found within the triangle, the 2 within symmetry and metric shapes, the 1 inside the plump line and erectability. Attentive and conscious practicing can create a feeling for shapes.

The Expression of a chakra
How can you see a developed chakra within a yoga pose?
Heinz Grill describes the heart chakra with a deep feeling of an inner centre in the heart while simultaneously experiencing the outer space. This deep feeling can be developed particularly well in yoga exercises that combine a calmness and a clear metric (e.g. the tree tadasana and the toe-tip position Padangusthasana ).

Expressive Ink Drawings
Exaggerating expressions with ink
The ink has a fluid and easy going stroke. The movement of the hand goes immediatly into the brush. These lines can create various expressions like easiness, sharp direction, tension, weightlessness, etc. to make feel a typical quality of movement.
The Experienceable Drawing – When I draw, I first observe the yoga posture. Then I discover a quality, that I want to make experiencable even more through my drawing.
yoga as Art
“The practice of yoga gives a decisive sense of measure and proportion. In terms of our bodies, this means learning to play our most important instrument and drawing the greatest resonance and harmony from it.”
— Jehudi Menuhin, Preface from Light on Yoga (friend and student of BKS Iyengar)
