This drawings shall make visible the significances of BKS Iyengar´s yoga poses – the coordination of all parts of the body into a clear shape. By seeing and studying professional postures, you can learn a lot about a pose and finally you can better work on your yoga expression yourself.

BKS Iyengar
The body is exactly directed in one plane. Leg, hip, chest, head and the stretched arm shape one diagonal line, that extends upwards, as well as downwards. The following sketches shall express this diagonal line. In this pose, Iyengar expresses the feeling of extension into the space, forwards and backwards.

In this pose, the rear leg is stretched straight, the head is in one line with the back. There is one diagonal line, that leads through the body.

This warrior of BKS Iyengar expresses an exact direction. The body is aligned in one plane, arm, head, body, legs and feet are directed forwards. The Pose also expresses a dynamic upwards. Iyengar expresses a sens for the front and back space.

The shape is very exact, the chest is vertical, the lifted leg horizontal. The coodination of all parts of the body into a clear shape can be experienced.

This pose is free of resistances. The sternum is lifted and opend to the outside and creates a noble expression. The head is raised and included in the rotation.

One can see straight legs, that are stretched straight in one line. Also the arms are stretched, but not out of the shoulders but out of the middle back. This straigth line expresses a force. One can see, that Iyengar does not make the exercise out of flexibility but coordinates consciously the body with own acitivity.

This is another version of the splits by BKS Iyengar, several years later. It expresses the same coordination. One can see, that he controlls actively all parts of the body. Legs and arms are coordinated straight, with force leading through. The middle zone of the chest is even more emphasised.

This position expresses also a very exact coordination of the body. The body is straight forward, the view is horizontal, the chest vertical. Iyengar expresses a clear sense for the space around him, and for the front space as well.

In this side triangle pose of BKS, one can see the conscious coordination of the body. Iyengar has a sens for the legs and the large step, als well as for the arms and the tow directions of above and below. There is a sense for the plane and the space expressed by the posture.

This triangle pose show BKS Iyengar when he is several years later. The pose has increased in clearlyness and shape. The legs are spread widely and they are perfectly straight, the arms are in vertical extension. In this position one can see, that the chest is more included into the shape and connects legs with arms like a unifiy in middle part of the body.
